John W. Loftus earned a bachelor's degree from Great Lakes Christian College, two master's degrees from Lincoln Christian University, a Master of Theology degree with half of the hours in William Lane Craig's classes at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and then spent a year and a half in a PhD program at Marquette University in Theology and Ethics. Most students who spend this much time in school would have their PhD's by that time.

He also taught Introduction to Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, Introduction to Ethics, Critical Thinking, and World Literature classes for the College of Lake County, Kellogg Community College, and/or Trine University. He was in the ministry for 14 years in Christian Churches in Illinois, Michigan, and Indiana as an Associate Minister, Minister and Senior minister. He was the President of the ministerial association in Angola, Indiana, when a minister there. As an atheist he has read a paper for a Regional Meeting of the Evangelical Philosophical Society, and one for the Annual Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature. He still teaches online college classes for the CFI Institute on occasion.
John authored the books Why I Became an Atheist: A Former Preacher Rejects Christianity (Rev. Ed. 2012), andThe Outsider Test for Faith: How Which Religion is True (2013), both published by the premier atheist publisher of our generation, Prometheus Books. He has edited three other important books, The Christian Delusion: Why Faith Fails (2010), The End of Christianity (2011), andChristianity is Not Great: How Faith Fails (2014). He also co-wrote a debate book with Dr. Randal Rauser titled, God or Godless (2013) published by the Christian publisher Baker Books.
John has participated in debates with Dinesh D'Souza, David Wood and Randal Rauser.
John has traveled America speaking for and entertaining audiences from Ohio, to New York, to Pennsylvania, to Louisiana, to Texas, to Los Angeles, to Colorado, to Wisconsin, and many places in-between. He even did a a couple of gigs in Canada, and somehow passed the border checkpoint as an atheist.
John is also a licensed minister with the First Church of Atheism and the Universal Life Church so he does weddings and funerals (but no baptisms, sorry!).
